Keith was at first the Vice-President of the male Division of St John Ambulance at Caterham taking this post in the 1960s. When my father was Superintendent/Officer-in-Charge in the 1970s, the Female Division (Nursing) and the Male Division (Ambulance) combined and Keith, who was by then was then the President of the Ambulance Division, was appointed the Joint President with Mrs Kay Anderson, who had been the Nursing Division's President.
With the rest of the Presidential team, including Mrs Ann Owen and Mr Gill Powell (joint Vice-Presidents), my Father and the rest of the Divisional leadership team, they started the 200 Club, later the 250 Club, and the Cheeses and Apple Pie Lunches held twice yearly at the Soper Hall, Caterham. These were incredible fundraising events and raised tens of thousands of pounds to support the work of the St John Ambulance volunteers at Caterham.
Caterham SJA was one of the largest, most successful and active in Surrey, in fact possibly in England, and had some of the best equipment and facilities to support the volunteer members and community, paid for from the considerable funds raised. This success was due , in no small way, to Keith and he will be long remembered for his leadership, use of his extensive local connections to 'twist arms' and raise funds, and his commitment to the works of St John Ambulance.
In recognition of this, Her Majesty The Queen, as Sovereign Head, approved his admission to the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Jerusalem as a Serving Brother in 1977 and he was promoted to Officer Brother in 1991. The Order is the parent of St John Ambulance. The picture shown of him in uniform with Conny at his Investiture.
Keith lived the mottos of the Order by his example; Pro Fide, for the Faith and Pro Utilitate Hominum, for the service of humanity.
May he rest in peace and rise in Glory!
